The new 1,536-bed, 135-acre medium security correctional facility will double the capacity of the in-state correctional system. Awarded through a competitive design competition, Hargis collaborated with the design-build team, State of Alaska Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) division and professional peers to plan, program, and design the telecommunications infrastructure to support the campus and facilities it entailed.

Building dedicated health care complexes to house 53,000 beds, the state is employing newly constructed, expanded and repurposed correctional centers to serve its mission. Engaged with the first project in the series of 7, Hargis’ telecommunications team is supporting the design-build approach to the new 1.155 million sf Stockton health care facility, responsible for the fire alarm, nurse call, telemetry, telemedicine, voice-over-IP, data networks, wireless LAN, CATV/MATV, IP healthcare paging, passive RFID tracking, and security electronics IP-based systems.

Clallam Bay Correction Center

Coordinating with the stakeholders spanning leadership at the state, facility and technical levels, Hargis led the telecommunications infrastructure replacement pre-design and design for the 15-building, medium- and close-custody fully operational correctional center. Housing 1,500 offenders, the anticipated multiple phased $20 million replacement will address the deficiencies in the backbone and building infrastructure, as well as a data center that serves the campus and provides regional IT office spaces to support the DOC’s peninsula and northwest interior needs.

The 100,000 sf furniture factory at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center comprised of an addition and remodel of existing spaces to consolidate 2 centers’ vocation programs. Space planning and system requirements were defined and designed to support new and existing equipment to serve the vocational education, CAD lab, Correctional Industries office and accounting staff needs. Hargis engineered the electrical and telecommunications systems in compliance with the LEED Silver minimum goals and 13-month design and construction schedule.

Coyote Ridge Corrections Center

With the implementation of the TEAM Program – qualifying pre-approved firms with RCDDs on staff to provide telecommunications consulting services – Hargis has provided on-going consulting services to the Department of Corrections. We recently served the largest correctional facility expansion in the nation (at that time) with the 2,018-bed expansion to the existing Coyote Ridge Corrections Center.

Mission Creek Corrections Center for Women
Belfair, WA

Converted from a juvenile detention center, Mission Creek Corrections Center now serves as a correctional facility for female offenders. With this change came the need to increase the facility’s capacity and a new 100-bed housing unit that features a day room and counselor offices was added. Hargis provided telecommunications services that included integrating security and low voltage systems infrastructure and pathways within the existing operating campus.

Housing close-custody offenders, the state penitentiary is going through a series of expansions to address an increase in the offender population and aging infrastructure. The South Close expansion includes a new 51,900 sf healthcare facility, a 21,500 sf Correctional Industries’ warehouse, and a recreational yard with offender telephones. It is being followed by a 500-bed addition with an expanded centralized kitchen to serve the complex and a CCTV security electronic system upgrade based upon newly developed state guidelines to serve the 540-acre campus. Critical to the success of these projects is the team’s intimate knowledge of the campus infrastructure and ability to work with various stakeholders, value-engineering team, and professional peers to develop a feasible approach to integrating these buildings within a high security environment featuring construction dating back to 1891 in accordance with the projects’ budgets.
